Arsenal Soccer School 2 - 1 Deeping Blue AET
Feelings were running high during this cup game and Deeping felt agrieved at some of the roughhouse tactics used by Arsenal to knock them off their stride and ultimately out of the cup.
Contrary to their namesakes in the Premier League, Arsenal SS did not come to play pretty football on their postage stamp of a pitch in Spalding. They set their stall out early with some crunching tackles that left Deeping players needing attention and substitutions to be made. This disrupted Deepings flowing football and they were unable to show their usual confidence on the ball.
Despite the game going against them, Deeping still created chances and on another day may have won by 3 or 4 goals, but they found Arsenal's keeper in inspired form and apparently left their shooting boots at home. Arsenal were not made to pay for the numerous free kicks they gave away and despite Deeping taking the lead though Harry Tidswell, they could not increase it.
Arsenal scored an equaliser in the second half and then a winner in extra time as there giant defender blocked Will Rodriguez's view from a free kick. The game ended in controversy as an Arsenal player was booked for a late and dangerous lunge on Ryan Olbromski, who thankfully was not injured too badly.
A bad day for Deeping who were not to repeat last seasons cup final appearance and must now get back to league football. Charlie Titcombe was given the man of the match award for an excellent display of how to PLAY FOOTBALL.
